2022. Pastry Pop Ups. San Francisco. California.

There has been so many pastry pop ups it's really difficult for me not to try them all. Thankfully for my waistline, I have not tried them all. But here are a few of note that you may also enjoy from all my research so far. I personally love Asian flavors so I tend to prioritize those on my list.

I love their cream puffs and they are only available Friday - Sunday (which is now listed on their handy dandy chart on their site); my personal favorite is the hojicha. I also really enjoy their croissants in addition, especially the kalbijjim. I have also tried 2 of their coffee drinks and they are excellent to pair with the pastries.

Another great pastry pop up with Asian flavors is Hanabi, which is the same owner as Zero& (real fruit teas with no additives). They now have multiple locations in East Bay, and San Francisco. The latest in Hayes Valley and another coming to Westfield downtown in SF. I loved their cakes as they are perfectly fluffy and not too sweet with flavors I love. You can order mini ones or large cakes for special occasions. They now have a variety of croissants in addition. If you also love Asian pastries, this is one not to be missed. Furthermore, they have limited editions each season and for special holidays as well.

For those of you that follow Melissa Chou who was the ex-pastry chef at Mister Jiu's, you would know that she started doing her pop ups once a week at Mister Jiu's on Sundays alongside an East Bay pick up. It's so dangerous having this so close to my house and it's definitely a treat. I like ordering her cakes for special occasions. If you are trying to impress someone, these would be the cakes to get. She also does cookies! What I love most about her pop up is that she does modern takes on classic Chinese baked goods with fresh seasonal ingredients.

Recently I was finally able to go go Blooms End, the traveling bakery by Mary Denham. Beware that the line is typically long and for good reasons. I enjoyed her savories immensely and I would recommend you trying some. She changes her location around the Bay Area each week, so be on the look out via her mailing list or her IG. It was incredibly difficult to not get everything to try. Even then, I did get too much, but I had to in the name of research! This is definitely one you should not miss.

6.12.2022 + 6.22.2022. Red Window. San Francisco. California.

My friend and I finally got to seeing Dear San Francisco at Club Fugazi, which I would highly recommend if you haven't already. PS: It's also all ages friendly. Before the show, we got bruch at Red Window to catch up properly. I had been wanting to try this in North Beach as it's so close to me and they have ample outdoor seating in addition to a menu filled with tapas and low proof drinks. I enjoyed it so much for brunch that I decided to go back with another friend for dinner one night. I love the location along with its lively decor and small plate options. Even for us non drinkers, we were very impressed by their inventive low proof alcohol offerings. Be sure to try that out the next time you are heading to North Beach. I loved all my dishes, I would recommend going a little nuts and try everything.

4.3.2022 + 5.28.2022. Aziza. San Francisco. California.

Aziza has been one of the restaurants on my hit list for quite some time now. Mourad (also by chef Mourad Lahlou) was actually one of my last dine in lunches in 3.2020 pre-lock down, and it was amazing. Finally this year I had my birthday dinner at Aziza. Boy do I want to go back to try everything else on their menu. You will definitely want to save room for that date cake. They have a gorgeous bar for drinks behind the dining room in addition to outdoor tables. Pro tip: they started doing brunch on weekends and it's amazing (see last picture below). They are near Legion of Honor if you want to make a day of it that side of San Francisco!

2.18.2022-2.20.2022. Napa + Yountville.

2022 seems to be trying for the worse year in my lifetime award. Well, bravo. Apologies for the lack of new inspirations as of late. But as you can see, the world has gone mad a few times over.

Back in February, I decided to meet a friend in Napa for the weekend as she was moving to Tokyo and that was the only weekend she had available. Seeing that she was doing make up for a wedding up in Napa, I suggested that we meet up that way to have a girl's night out. Since I had credit card points to use and I could do with a getaway from my tiny apartment and San Francisco.

I have never stayed in downtown Napa before and oh boy was I in for an eyeful. I opted for Archer Hotel in downtown Napa as I wanted a nice room with a bathtub. That tub turned out to be ridiculously huge. I could have fit 3 of me in there easily.

Since this is my first time actually staying in downtown Napa, here are a few things I have picked up. If you want a nice meal, you will need a reservation well in advance. It will be extremely difficult to just wing it there. The only thing you can wing is likely an early breakfast to miss the hungover crowd. But seeing that Napa is like the Disneyland of wine and hoards of people travel from all over (including from around the world), it is rather packed. It was a reminder of why I am always on the Sonoma side instead. I remember driving back from dinner on a Friday night and thinking: what is this drunken hot mess with all these adults here? And boy, did I get an eyeful! So if you are more into the quieter less Vegas-esque wine country experience, downtown Napa is not for you.

Luckily for me, I wake up early since I don't really drink and I was a party of 1, I was able to wing it for an early breakfast at Grace's Table and sat outside.

I walked all over downtown afterwards and went to the farmer's market and also saw my friends' restaurants. Since I am not a drinker, I have no insights for you in terms of tasting rooms sadly. However, you should definitely do your homework ahead of time and get yourself reservations as soon as you can for best pickings and for a more enjoyable trip overall.

Then I drove to Yountville to meet up with my friend and also to go for a stroll in one of my favorite quaint towns as it was in full spring bloom glory. Even despite its crowdedness with tourists from all over it could not ruin my mood. Hilariously, I was not able to find a cafe to have a cup of tea/coffee as it was only all tasting rooms and restaurants. I have to say, I had never seen Yountville so busy before and the line at Bouchon Bakery was the longest I have ever seen throughout the years.

I was able to meet up with my chef and food purveryor friends for dinner at La Calenda in Yountville for some great Mexican. I mean, is there a bad meal in Yountville really? I have tried for years and I have not had one still.

Then I finally had dinner at the classic Bistro Jeanty. I have always wanted to have a meal there but never made it, so we were both very excited to finally try this staple in Yountville. There is a reason why this is a classic and staple: It's extremely consistent throughout the years, and the menu is filled with classic french bistro offerings that never disappoint. Naturally, we had most of it.

With luck, I was even able to score a last minute reservation at Bouchon Bistro for lunch with another friend to wrap out my weekend. It's always a treat especially since I refused to line up at the bakery for my usual  loot to bring home. But I do recommend it as the bakery does have amazing pastry offerings, hence the long line.

If you are planning on a trip to famed Napa Valley, please do your research. It's a rather large area with different offerings and hundreds of wineries. But beware that people from all over the world come to visit as it's a crowded travel destination. So give yourself plenty of time for research and for your desired reservations. And even then, you may still not be able to get them. Personally, I am always on the Sonoma side as I tend to be more bohemian and am more into the farming sides of Northern California, also, my friends own Scribe Winery. I also really love Healdsburg as it's another quaint town with amazing food and ambiance. All my chef and food purveyor friends that live in Napa county all gush about how nice St. Helena is. I have only been there once for a wedding weekend and I was rather drunk and hungover for the majority of it. So anything I say about St. Helena is at best suspect. A big part of the fun about all my trips is the research. Dig in. Find things that speak to you. Get excited. Enjoy!

1.30.2022. Hilda and Jesse. San Francisco. California.

Clearly I have not stopped thinking about the best pancakes in the world. So when my friend wanted to meet up in North Beach, I suggested perhaps we start at Hilda and Jesse because I knew she would love it. Also, we saw guy in cat hat with dog with a dog bun in a bag.

Since this was a late lunch time slot, we opted for the chef's adventure, which was a tasting menu. We were so glad we tried this as the savories were just as incredible as the best pancakes in the world, which is not surprising given the background of the chef. FYI, they also do dinners on Mondays. It was quite a bit of food so we went for an incredibly long and hilly walk afterwards to burn off the calories.

1.22.2022. Sorrel. San Francisco. California.

A few people had recommended Sorrel to me and it was actually on my short list to check out. So when my friend was in town and had time to meet up for dinner for a proper catch up, I was thrilled that Sorrel offered outdoor dining (see cute parklet below). It turned out that she had also wanted to eat at Sorrel as well. It was meant to be!

A little background story for you: Chef Alex Hong has cooked alongside Michale Tusk at Quince. I was drawn to Sorrel because we all know I am very into local organic produce and they even grow some of their own on their roof. Another fun fact for you: I actually do not prefer fine dining, as I find it mostly really stuffy and not that comfortable from an atmosphere and experience perspective in addition to the food all being perfectly the same more or less. So while I do some fine dining, it is actually not my personal preference and I typically find them to be a chore. So it actually takes a bit something extra for me to actually go do fine dining and write about it. Thankfully, my list is exceptionally curated by this point in my career. So lucky you.

Please note that they are only doing tasting menu at the moment. Per usual, there are a few additions. We opted for the casoncelli with black truffles. Because, we cannot say no to pasta with truffles! While I was very interested in the duck (one of their signature dishes), it was more difficult to do also duck with our quail course. I was surprised by how foamy the entire tasting menu was: 3 out of 7 courses were foamy. I found that very interesting, but I definitely know people that are really not into foam food. So you may want to call ahead if that is you. Otherwise, enjoy! I think my favorite course was the Spanish octopus and I also loved the bread.
