In my family's case, all of the above.
My family suffered greatly during the Cultural Revolution in China. My grandfather was thrown in jail for being a principal/educated. The rest of my family fled to Hong Kong piece by piece to escape the oppression. They lost everything. It was then a high priority to flee Hong Kong to escape its eminent return to China by 1997. That is how I came to live in California.
Having been to this exhibit on opening night, I have to say that this show is much different during the day. It feels more hopeful and less haunting.
